Instructor: Ruth Seward

During a typical day you pass by numerous trees in your yard, on the side of the road, and next to places you gather for work or play. Each tree with its own unique traits and characteristics. During this lunch and learn you will gain some basic tree ID skills to help identify those key characteristics of common trees. Join Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s Director of Outreach and Community Engagement and Certified Arborist, Ruth Seward as she guides you through the basics of leaf, bark, and fruit identification for 30 trees that grow in our New England spaces.

Ruth Seward is the Director of Outreach and Community Engagement for Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA and a certified arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). She began her work with urban trees in 2010 when she joined the Worcester Tree Initiative, an organization committed to planting and caring for trees in the urban environment. Her work there included creating educational programming for tree stewards of all ages, coordinating large tree give away events and managing a summer tree watering program. In 2016, Ruth was tasked to lead Worcester Tree Initiative and merge the program into Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s organization. Ruth became the Director of Outreach and Community Engagement for THBG in 2019 and retained WTI as a program of this department. She currently runs tree programs such as the volunteer ‘Master Tree Stewards’ and ’Young Adult Foresters’ youth employment program for Tower Hill.
